Garry Martin

Garry has coached in Southern CA for the last 15 years and as a Head Coach for the older boys at Express since 2018/19 season. As a U14 youth player Garry was selected to represent the East of England to play in the US against what was then the top North East US High School Teams. He was part of the West Ham Utd and Ipswich Town youth team squads from the age of 13 to 17. Not making it to the full professional ranks Garry played in the fifth tier of the English Football League (semi-professional) until forced out through recurrent knee injuries at the age of 35. At that point he took up coaching on a part-time basis, passed his FA Coaching Certificate, before moving to the US for business. As an entrepreneur and with his long time UK business partner they acquired a technology company in Carlsbad, CA. After being in the US for a three years Garry obtained his USSF E License and then continued his passion for coaching here in Southern CA this time at the youth level.

“As a coach my goal is to always play the beautiful game as it was meant to be played. I know that sounds a bit of a cliché but when your team has the ball the opposition cannot score, so retaining possession is key to the development of a successful team. Coincidently the quicker you are able to retrieve possession when you have lost the ball, the less time the opposition has to attempt a shot on goal. Such a simple game! By creating training sessions that compel players into making decisions without the need to for me to continually bark orders or ‘joy stick’ them into position, I aim to create the best possible team environment while improving their skill level. My goal is for them to become ‘students of the game’ and ensure that they develop to their full soccer potential. From my experiences as a parent and coaching the older teams, I know that soccer and team collaboration can provide a foundation for success, not only on the field but also post high school graduation and beyond. If I can make a positive contribution to their success as a soccer player or in life, and hopefully both, then job done!”

Garry’s team(s) successes include winning Presidio League Championships and Cups, State Cup Final appearances and winning prestigious tournaments in Southern CA such as NHB.
