Refereeing is a great opportunity for kids 12 and older to get involved in a leadership role in soccer and earn some money! To find out more about how to become a referee visit the CYSA referee. The webpage for recreational referees is especially helpful. You can also check for local refereee training classes at the San Diego County Soccer Referees Association.  Kirk Koelling (ESL’s own referee guru) would be happy to answer any questions, please email him

We recommend that all referee candidates take the Grade 8, two-day class.  This allows the referee graduate to work competitive games.  The best time to take a class is in the spring.  That will enable to work during the summer tournament season.  It's possible to work nearly every weekend and it's a great summer job.  The extra benefit is that the new referee will be working with experienced referees that will be able to mentor them during the first season.
